AVM-Explorer: Multi-Volume Visualization of Vascular Structures for Planning of Cerebral AVM Surgery

چکیده
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain are rare vascular disorders characterized by the presence of direct connections between cerebral arteries and veins. Preoperative planning of AVM surgery is a challenging task. The neurosurgeon needs to gain a detailed understanding of both the pathoanatomy of the lesion as well as its location and spatial relation to critical functional areas and white matter fiber bundles at risk. A crucial element during this planning phase is the precise identification of feeding arteries, draining veins, and arteries “en passage". To this end, a variety of imaging modalities for displaying neurovascular structures exists, both tomographic as well as projection based. However, the conventional 2D slice based review of such data is not well suited to help understanding the complex angioarchitecture of an AVM. In this paper, we demonstrate how stateof-the-art techniques from the fields of computer graphics and image processing can support neurosurgeons with the challenge of creating a mental 3D model of the lesion and understanding its internal structure. To evaluate the clinical value of our method, we present results from three case studies along with the medical assessment of an experienced neurosurgeon.

Long term effects of Gamma knife Radiosurgery for treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations
Abstract Background: The Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKR) is an established management option for Cerebral Ar-teriovenous Malformations (AVMS). Therapeutic benefits of radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations are complete obliteration of nidus with minimal neurological deficit. Methods: Radiosurgery was performed between February 2003 and April 2010 at Kamraniye day clinic, Teh-ran, Iran, us...

Background: Radiation-induced molecular changes on the endothelial surface of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) may be used as markers for specific vascular targeting agents. In this study, we examined the level of expression of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) on brain endothelial cell surface after radiation treatment, with the aim of targeting the radiation-induc...
متن کاملHuge Arteriovenous Malformation of Upper Lip- A Case Report
Introduction: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are uncommon vascular lesions that can arise in any part of the body. Case Report: In this case study, we presented a huge AVM of the upper lip in a 70-year-old man that he noticed since 5years ago with slow growth in this period. Computed tomography angiography revealed a large AVM with feeders from the right...
متن کاملAnalysis on the effect and prognostic factors of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) after endovascular embolization combined gamma knife surgery
Background: Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (BAVM) was induced by the congenital development abnormality of partial vascular anomaly differentiation. Better prognostic factors should be developed by our researchers. Objective: To analyse the clinical and follow-up materials about Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) treated by endovascular embolization combined with radiosurgery (Gamma Knife Surge...
متن کاملComputer-Assisted Visualization of Arteriovenous Malformations on the Home PC
OBJECTIVE: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are difficult lesions partly because it is difficult to formulate a mental, 3D image of the nidus and of its supplying arteries, draining veins, and arteries of passage. Our purpose is to provide PC software that allows better visualization of complex, three-dimensional (3D), connected vascular anatomy for surgical planning. METHODS: Vessels are def...
